Types of painting

If you’ve picked a new paint color or palette for your home renovation project, you may sense like you’re eager to head to the paint store. But before you do, there’s one more action to take before picking your paint and its finish. Paint arrives in various finishes, and you’ll need to know which finish is the best choice for your project before you can split out the brushes and rollers.

5 Types of Wall Paints and Finishes

There are five types of paint finishes, classified by their reflectiveness:

1.Flat/Matte: Flat paints also called matte paints have the slightest volume of shine. They present the most coverage of any other paint and need fewer coats to cover blemishes like nail holes. While they’re great for coverage, they’re the least strong type of paint and will be destroyed if used with cleaner, so they’re best used in low-traffic areas, like dining rooms, and surfaces that won’t be affected much, like roofs.

    2. Eggshell: Eggshell coatings are very beautiful with a paint finish. They look lustrous than flat paints (with the fragile low shine of an eggshell), they still cover blemishes, and they’re more long-lasting than flat surfaces (though still not as strong as satin or gloss surfaces). Eggshell paints are excellent for places with low or medium spots like living rooms, hallways, and entryways.

    3. Satin: Satin coatings are the most common interior paint finish. They have a shine and are handier to clean than flat and eggshell paints, which makes them an outstanding choice for high-traffic areas like kitchens, playrooms, family rooms, bathrooms, and laundry rooms. (Before you use a satin paint, be aware that their sheen sadly is more apt to expose brush strokes, making touch-ups somewhat tricky down the line.)

4. Semi-gloss: Semi-gloss paints are bright and reflective. They’re remarkably durable and mildew-resistant, so they’re best used in rooms that get a lot of damage and tear or moisture, like kids’ rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms. They’re also excellent for trim. As a more lustrous finish, they will show scratches more than less shiny paints.

5. High-gloss: High-gloss paints are the most sparkling paint finish of the bunch. They’re also the most long-lasting and washable, so they can manage daily scrubbing. Analyze this line of paint for doors, trim, and cabinetry. In appreciation to being an interior paint, high-gloss can be used as an external part as well, on things like shutters. However, prep work is essential when using this polish it can show many blemishes when applied wrongly.

What to Consider When Choosing a Paint Finish?

Before you head to the store and choose out a coating, there are various things that you should focus on:

  • Traffic Maybe the most essential thing to acknowledge when picking a paint finish is the volume of traffic that your room will endure. Cluttered rooms like kitchens and playrooms will profit from more long-lasting finishes like satin and semi-gloss, while more patient rooms like dining rooms can get aside with an eggshell or even flat paints.

  • Paint sheen Paint surfaces are explained in terms of their radiance, from no-shine smooth coatings to very glistening high-gloss finishes. The shininess of each surface will affect the volume of light that they glare back into the room, so if you want to try to help lighten a dim place, a somewhat higher-gloss finish will do great than a matte finish.

  • Surface imperfections The more studious a finish, the more it will show surface imperfections in the thing you’re painting. If you want to paint a wall that has lots of nail holes or spots, you may want to view less glossy paint it will help conceal those blemishes and keep the wall looking flat.
